Two Stories - A man originally from Kenya, a doctor from Sri Lanka

Over the years, I have received emails from people responding to the Friendship Letter. They have shared how the suicide of a friend or family member has affected them or their family, or they often relate how they have suffered from depressing and suicidal thoughts and feelings, and how they have managed or are managing to cope.

I recently received an email from Chris Okubo who describes his account as:

"a story of a boy - now a man - whose childhood began in Kenya. A boy whose childhood had an outer appearance of being normal and happy. His mother tries to save him and his siblings by escaping to America, where her son grows up into a seemingly normal man, but is tormented by his childhood and becomes an alcoholic and a notorious womanizer." Chris has created a website that explains how he turned to his faith, after nearly killing himself using an automobile."

Another email recently came from a doctor in Sri Lanka. Dr. Nilvala Vijayasiri wrote:

"I am a doctor from Sri Lanka, happily married for 12 years, having three children.

There were five in our family, I being the youngest with two brothers and two sisters. We became four on Christmas eve of 1980. My eldest sister, second in the family, walked out one sunny morning, walking about three kilometres to lie down on a railtrack.

My father was alcoholic. There were frequent, almost daily fights between the parents. My mother was a hardworking woman. But foolhardy at times. There were many separations and unions. This was life from our birth. It was a life which had no constancy. No solace. A life lived in poverty and shame in a middle class neighbourhood. It was the shame, frustration and hopelessness that sent my 19 year old sister to her death. She was a responsible, honest and just character. She was like our second mother.

We all thought of suicide. We promised each other we would not resort to it for it would only bring more shame and heartache for the others. Yet, she being the eldest of sisters, the burden may have been too much to bear.

My second brother saw her lying dead on the rail tracks. Later, he was in the wilderness of drug abuse and vagabond life for nearly 20 years, coming out of it as if by a miracle, just 3 years ago. So we are at least four again.

My elder brother joined the army, topped his batch and went on to have a good career there. My second sister and I entered Law and Medical faculties and are now an attorney and a doctor respectively. The best thing to have happened is that my second brother came out of his wilderness to be with us again.

When I look back, I feel, that if only my elder sister had some energy left to live on for another year or two, she may have escaped the rot we were in to forge her own life and career like we did. The pain in each of us is still very great. It still brings tears. Most definitely it will never go away.

We are taught that everything in life is temporary. All material things are impermanent. Our happinesses do not last for ever. But then it is also true with the sadness. True with so called no win situation. Nothing can last for ever. Situations are bound to change. The key then is patience and looking out. Sometimes it is difficult to find help. It was for us. We did not know where to turn to when our lives as children became miserable. Especially in a country like Sri Lanka where precious few sources exist even now let alone two or three decades back.

I do not know whether by reading this any one who has thoughts of sadness and suicide would benefit. I sincerely hope so. That was the only reason for my making these comments. Anybody who wishes to correspond is welcome to do so. I hope I could be of some help to some body in their time of need. Some thing we did not have when we were children."

In both these stories, and a constant theme of the letters that I receive, is that there is "the appearance" of a normal, happy home life or childhood, when in actual fact there is an abundance of inhumaneness or cruelty. But there is often a general lack of simple kindness that enables one to grow and "be" in a safe, loving and caring environment.

Tragically, there is great shame and stigma associated with suicidal thoughts and feelings and mental health in general. With this cloud of shame/stigma to whom can one turn to in desperate times - a family member, teacher, friend, personal physician or member of the clergy? I remember telling a member of the clergy, many years ago, about how depressed I was. His answer was simple "I had nothing to depressed about. I had a good home, family, successful career and was of good health." This response only led me to feel even more helpless in my despair. Often, people simply do not know how to respond to a depressed and suicidal loved one. For this reason, I included in the Suicide Prevention Help Web directory a category entitled Helping Someone.

Fortunately, there are many suicide prevention or crisis hotlines that offer a truly caring and empathetic ear. The people who man these telephone lines are trained and do not judge someone simply because life is giving them a rough go. If you need to find a crisis center, please browse Crisis Centers to find support anywhere in the world.

Finally, one can learn how to begin treating oneself and others with genuine kindness. I created a free online course and eBook called A Guide in Humane Awareness. This program leads learners towards a deeper appreciation of how kindness, cruelty and humaneness impact one's life.

I have learned, over the years, that no matter how bad I felt about the particular situation I was in, that if I performed an act of kindness towards another, or especially towards myself, the painful feelings I was experiencing abated, and I was given the opportunity to appreciate the simple goodness that is within. This goodness, or the essential core of an individual, is the life-supporting force that enables one to live without shame, and offers one the courage to ask for help.

World Suicide Prevention Day - 10 September, 2007

World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, is an annual event sponsored by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the World Health Organization. This year the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is "Suicide across the Life Span." This theme has been adopted to emphasize the fact that suicide occurs in all ages and suicide prevention and intervention strategies may be adapted to meet the needs of different age groups.

Petition to Help Stop Pro-Suicide Internet Sites

There is an online petition that people can sign to help stop pro-suicide Internet sites. The petition can be found here: http://www.petitiononline.com/nolists/petition.html

The introduction to the petition states:

"To: any rational person out there

Imagine that you're lost, depressed, considering suicide. You're browsing the internet, perhaps in search of support, perhaps looking for information... when you stumble upon a pro-suicide site.

If you are not familiar with what these actually are, let me enlighten you. One in particular was a newsgroup. They shared tips on killing themselves via this group. There are still active mailing lists on such sites as Yahoo! groups. But the most offensive, most irresponsible, most inappropriate thing they have to offer, are the lists. As one site displaying the list explains, it is "The famous (infamous?) "Internet suicide file", containing a list of methods with procedures and likelihood of success." This contains a list of lethal doses of poisons and pills, how to properly hang oneself, and more disturbing methods such as disembowelment, drowning, hypothermia, and shooting oneself.

Is there any reason to allow this floating around the internet, just waiting to fall into the wrong hands? There is no way of knowing how many original members of the aforementioned group have already killed themselves, however be assured the number is sickening. When reading the lists, items like this: "One [member] successfully suicided with a friend, each taking *** mg of Morphine i.v." jump out at you.

We petition to have these sites removed from the internet, if not outlawed. We will present this petition to the hosts of these sites and to legal authorities. We plan to devote our time and efforts to ridding the internet of this sort of destructive and harmful material, and we will not take "no" for an answer.

Over the years, I have answered thousands of emails from people, from every corner of the world, who were despairing and seriously contemplating suicide. These people have ranged from teens and young adults to seniors, military personnel and their families, individuals going through the break-up of a relationship or the loss of a loved one, or individuals for whom life is giving them a very bad turn. In all cases, these people need lovingkindness and understanding.

Suicide Prevention Help began as a Friendship Letter as I was shocked to discover Web sites that encouraged people to kill themselves. Some of these sites are a poor excuse for humour, others are just downright mean-spirited. In all cases, these sites prey on the vulnerable, who may be so fragile that they can not perceive the inherent inhumane content of the information they are presented with.

I encourage everyone to sign this petition to help stop the proliferation of sites that encourage people to kill themselves.

Marital and De facto Separation Study - improving support for separated persons!

The Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP), Griffith University is conducting a study on the impact of marital and de facto separation on people's psychological well-being. This research will give us information on the causes of distress for people going through separation, as well as information on the different points during the separation process people feel most distressed. This information is crucial for the development of appropriate support which helps to reduce the stress experienced during the separation.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THIS STUDY?
Men and women 18 YEARS + who have experienced a separation (marital or de facto relationship) in the past 12 months
Must not yet be divorced or must not have finalised de facto relationship separation.

*IF YOU ARE NOT SEPARATED, BUT KNOW SOMEONE WHO FITS THIS CRITERIA, PLEASE FORWARD THESE DETAILS TO THEM!

WHAT IS REQUIRED:
Participants are asked to complete a 30 minute questionnaire (and again in 6 months time).

One Year Anniversary - Suicide Prevention Help Web Directory

A year ago, I began creating a Web directory of helpful suicide prevention resources from around the world. The object of this project was to provide a central portal for people to find the information they need whether for themselves or friends and family members.

Since then, over 117,000 visits have been made to the site from all regions of the world, from Australia to China, Kenya to Brazil, Alaska to California, Canada to Russia, the UK to Japan, and many points in between.

I have received letters from students, people going through a marriage break-up, professionals and senior citizens, military personnel, parents, teens and young adults, researchers and other individuals and organizations involved in suicide prevention. Suicide is truly a worldwide problem. Whether one is a farmer in India, or a North American teen, or a student in Japan, or an out-of-work European adult, or a soldier in a military operation, the consequences of suicide have a profoundly-deep impact on one's family, friends and associates.

I am thankful the support I have received from many people in the development of this project to help offer comfort and resources for those who are suicidal and the people who care for them.

Suicide Prevention Help Wins Humanitarian Service Award

Suicide Prevention Help has won the Surflocal Humanitarian Service Award for the work accomplished on this suicide prevention project, as well as for website excellence. Laudation: Very good site, especially the Friendship Letter and wonderful resources...Great Job!

The award is given to non-profit, humanitarian projects and services that bring about a "Better World."

Recent winners include Heartbeat International -the world's premier provider of free cardiac pacemakers, implantable defibrillators and medical care to needy patients around the world.

In April of this year, Suicide Prevention Help also won a bronze medal award from Penmarric.ns.ca. Award program creator Linda Smith wrote: "I was impressed with your site. There are far too few personal websites around that can help people both by the information they contain, but also b/c they give survivor info. It's a darn shame that mental illness [for many] still carries a stigma, and it's important to get the word out that there is nothing to hide...Congratulations also on being this year's first recipient of my YANA [you are not alone] award. This is unrated and give to sites that deal with any mental health issue. Well Done."

Psychiatric nursing students at University of KwaZulu-Natal looking for support

Three psychiatric nursing students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, concerned about the increasing rate of suicide in their communities, are planning a suicide prevention program for teenagers between the ages of 13-19 years. They are looking for donations that will enable them to provide participants with refreshments during workshops and other programs.

Browsing YouTube for suicide prevention resources, I came upon a suicide prevention video, produced by Springfield Middle School.

This video offers hope for young people who are thinking about suicide. I found it to be most moving and I have included it in the Suicide Prevention Help Global Web Directory under the Teens and Young Adults category.

I am impressed by the level of courage and honesty shown by the producers of these videos. By the same token, I found that some of the videos, posted on YouTube about suicide, range from a lack of taste to simply disgusting.

The impact of suicide on survivors is devastating and profound, and I cannot see anything funny this topic. Suicide should not be sensationalized but should be considered with the compassion and empathy that it rightfully deserves, for the sake of suicide survivors and suicide-attempt survivors.
